Foundations of Massage, the student will learn about the history and evolution of massage, preventing disease transmission, laws and regulations, and ethics of massage. Students will also learn the benefits and effects of massage, massage cautions and contraindications, and the therapeutic relationship.
Student Objectives
- Define Pathology, and give example of pathology agents
- Define the term massage
- Name major figures in the development of medicine and specifically in massage therapy
- Discuss the ancient views and uses of massage that incorporate both Eastern and Western cultures
- Explain the role of the European Renaissance and Enlightenment on the professional of massage therapy
- Distinguish the contributions of Pehr Henrik Ling from those of later physicians and therapists
- Reconstruct the development of therapeutic massage that incorporates the various massage styles
- Integrate recent developments in the field of therapeutic massage into the original framework of Pehr Ling and his students
Course description
Foundations of Massage, the student will learn about the history and evolution of massage, preventing disease transmission, laws and regulations, and ethics of massage. Students will also learn the benefits and effects of massage, massage cautions and contraindications, and the therapeutic relationship. In addition, the student will learn about the massage equipment, body mechanics principles, core concepts for massage and bodywork application, and several common massage strokes. Prerequisites: None.
