In this course students learn of the ethical issues associated with massage therapy, such as client confidentiality, boundaries, scope of practice and appropriate behavior as well as ethical business practices.
Student Objectives
- State all important elements of a therapeutic relationship
- Define appropriate strategies for problem solving
- Contrast and compare legal and ethical issues
- Give the two factor limiting client confidentiality and example of each
- Define scope of practice, giving what is often permitted and restricted by law
- Identify characteristics of healthy boundaries
- Point out common mistake that often lead to crossing boundaries
- Compare and contract transference and countertransference, stating “red flags” of each
- Define sexual misconduct
- Outline possible consequences of sexual misconduct
Course description
Ethics and Business Practices In this course students learn of the ethical issues associated with massage therapy, such as client confidentiality, boundaries, scope of practice and appropriate behavior as well as ethical business practices. This course also introduces students to accounting, management, marketing, finance and first aid/CPR. Topics such as business planning, protection, and operation are discussing as well. At the end of the course, students will achieve a better understanding of ethical issues and business practices as well as how to perform basic first aid and CPR. Prerequisites: None.
